Custom homes on large hillside lots
Highland Hills is an established custom-home neighborhood in El Dorado Hills, along Highland Hills Drive near Folsom Lake and Town Center. Lots run from about three quarters of an acre to well over an acre. Homes were built one at a time from the early 1990s on, so no two rooflines match: some are long single-story plans with deep eaves, others are two-story with several hips and gables and big garages. Several homes have a secondary unit or a detached garage on the lot.
A custom home needs a custom plan. We quote each run separately: the main roofline, the garage, a detached building, the entry, trees and driveway.
What changes on an acre lot
- Long driveways. Stake lights spaced along the full length of a driveway use a lot of line and more than one power point. We put a timer at each plug so they come on together.
- Mature trees. Many lots here have large trees. A big tree takes a spiral trunk wrap and the first tier of limbs with a set strand count. We do not light the whole canopy.
- Steep or tall roofs. Second-story peaks and steep pitches get the line clipped to the gutter lip and shingle edge from a ladder, not from the roof surface. Tile, composition and metal roofs each take a different clip.
- Fence lines and gates. A front fence or entry pillar is lit with the same C9 line, run along the top rail.
Color, timers, takedown and how to get a number
Warm white suits stone and earth-tone exteriors. Multicolor is available and shows well on a long single-story eave. Both can go on the same house. Every outlet gets a timer so nothing stays on all night.
Mid-season, if a run fails, we fix it. January is takedown, and the lights can stay with us until next November. Not every Highland Hills lot is in an association; if yours is, check its seasonal-decoration rule and tell us the window.

Yes. Most owners light what is seen from the street and the driveway approach. The quote lists each part so you can drop any of them.
