Roofline, tree and walkway lighting for the 40th through 49th Street blocks of East Sacramento.
Houses built in the 1920s and 1930s
The Fabulous Forties run from 40th Street to 49th Street between J Street and Folsom Boulevard. Most of the houses went up in the 1920s and 1930s. Tudor, Colonial Revival, Arts and Crafts and California bungalow styles sit side by side, often on the same block. Lots are larger than the rest of East Sacramento, and many front yards have planting that has been in place for decades. There is no HOA here. Street trees are mature, and on most blocks the canopy meets over the road.
Older homes have wood siding, wood trim and broken rooflines with gables, dormers and chimneys. We clip C9 LED bulbs to the gutter lip or the shingle edge and cut the line to follow every break in the roof instead of draping it across. A Tudor peak and the eave of a bungalow porch each take their own run. Where a section has no gutter, the clips go on the shingle edge.
Trees, hedges and the sidewalk view
These blocks are known for holiday displays, and the street trees are a large part of that. On 47th Street the trees are wrapped to look like candy canes. We wrap trunks and main limbs in a spiral with a set number of strands per foot, so the spacing stays even from the base to the first fork. Hedges take net lights. Walkways from the sidewalk to the porch take stake lights at a fixed spacing.
Power comes from an exterior outlet. Houses of this age often have only one or two, so we plan the runs from that outlet and put a timer at the plug.
Warm white or multicolor
You can have either. Warm white reads as a single line along the roof and fits the period trim on these houses. Multicolor is the choice on many blocks where the display is the point. Lit wreaths in warm white hang on the front door or a gable.
Timers, mid-season fixes and takedown
Installs run from early November through December. If a strand goes out during the season, we come back and fix it. Takedown is in January, and we can store your lights until next year. For a quote, send the address, the number of stories, the roof type and the parts you want lit, plus a photo from the sidewalk. Most Fabulous Forties quotes are done without a site visit. Call (916) 659-6549. The neighborhood is about 20 miles west of Folsom. See Sacramento for the city page and Land Park for the same era south of downtown.
Common questions in Fabulous Forties (East Sacramento)
Do you wrap the street trees on my block?
Yes. Tell us which trees and how high the wrap should go. We wrap the trunk and the main limbs and keep the line away from any overhead wire.
My front gable has no gutter. Where do the lights go?
On the shingle edge. Shingle clips hold the C9 line to the first course of shingles, so the line follows the gable to the peak.
